How Often Do Brits Move? Insight for Thetford Homeowners

When it comes to moving house, some people can’t sit still for long — while others stay happily rooted for decades.

So, how typical are you? Are you the restless type who enjoys a change of scenery every few years, or are you settled in your forever home with no plans to move again?

A new national survey has shed light on just how often Brits move — and the results might surprise you.

How often do we really move?

Property platform Compare My Move surveyed 2,000 people about their moving history and found:

• 29% had moved two or three times
• 32% had moved four to six times
• 15% had moved seven to nine times
• 7% had moved ten to twelve times
• 7% had moved more than twelve times

Overall, the average Brit moves six times in their lifetime.

The most common reasons for moving were upsizing, downsizing and lifestyle changes — while only 3% of moves were due to work.

Are we moving less than before?

Despite the perception that we’re a more mobile society today, research suggests the opposite is true.

A study by Queen’s University Belfast found that the number of people moving home has been falling steadily since the 1970s. In fact, around a million fewer people moved in the 2000s compared to the 1970s.

This trend isn’t unique to the UK. Similar patterns have been recorded in countries such as Australia, the US and Germany.

Why are people moving less?

Researchers say several factors have contributed to this shift:

Rising house prices and a shortage of available homes
Younger adults living with parents for longer
An ageing population, with older homeowners less likely to relocate

All of this means that, for many people, moving home has become a rarer and more considered decision.

Finding your forever home

Because we move less often now, each move matters more. Choosing the right property — and the right agent — is key to getting it right.

A trusted estate agent will help you navigate the process smoothly, offer expert advice on pricing and marketing, and ensure you achieve the best possible outcome with minimal stress.
