Six Great Ethical Gift Ideas for the Home This Christmas
As ethical agents, we’re always looking for ways to do a bit of good and share the load where we can. With Christmas fast approaching, our team here at Location Location Thetford has pulled together a list of ethical gift ideas for the home that are thoughtful, practical and kind to the planet.
1. A tree or even a whole forest
Trees do an incredible job for the environment, wildlife and our own wellbeing.
If your friend or family member doesn’t have space for a real tree at home, you could arrange for one to be planted on their behalf instead.
The National Trust offers tree gifting from around ten pounds and provides a certificate, making it a simple but meaningful present.
2. A hamper of ethical treats
A homemade hamper is a lovely way to tailor a gift while keeping things ethical.
Think beeswax or soy candles, natural air fresheners, handmade soaps or bath soaks.
You can stretch the home theme with seasonal food and drink too. Fairtrade chocolate, locally sourced honey, homemade preserves, farm cheeses or organic wine always go down well.
3. Something solar
Solar-powered gifts are a win on every level. They reduce carbon emissions and save on electricity and batteries.
Popular options include solar garden lights, phone chargers, small fans, clocks or even solar-powered home security items. They are practical gifts that keep on giving.
4. A rewilding box
They might look like weeds at first glance, but rewilding seed boxes are brilliant for gardens, balconies and window boxes.
Native wildflowers add colour through spring and summer and help support birds, bees and butterflies.
You can buy ready-made boxes online or create your own using seeds from a local garden centre. Cornflowers, poppies, foxgloves, nigella and thyme are all great choices.
5. A class or experience
Experiences often mean more than physical gifts.
A course or workshop can help someone learn a new skill, reduce stress and even live more sustainably.
Look for classes in DIY, soft furnishings, sewing, arts and crafts, cookery or gardening. It’s a gift that lasts far beyond Christmas Day.
6. A good old gift voucher
It may not sound exciting, but gift vouchers are one of the most ethical presents you can give.
They allow someone to spend the money on exactly what they need for their home, avoiding waste and unwanted clutter. Sometimes the simplest option really is the best.
If you haven’t started your Christmas shopping yet, now’s the time to get going. And if you know someone who might appreciate these ideas, feel free to share this post with them.
